Here is the Tribune’s Fred Robledo interviewing Head Coach Mike Maggiore and the Bulldogs 2010 season
West Covina Football 2010
With Bulldog football practice just around the corner, let’s start off this site’s blogging season with some good news . Walter Thurmond III , former Bulldog standout and considered one of the best corners in college football while playing for the Oregon Ducks, was drafted in the 4th round by the Seattle Seahawks.
Thurmond would have probably been selected much higher had it not been for a knee injury that he sustained in his final season at Oregon. Here is a video interview with him at the “Happiest Place On Earth”.
Costly Turnovers End West Covina Bulldog’s Season
The West Covina Bulldogs knew they had to play virtually error-free football to dethrone the defending champion Charter Oak Chargers.
That did not happen.
In fact, the Bulldogs fumbled five times including one that was returned for the first score of the game. Another noteworthy mistake was being flagged for delay of game on a 2nd and goal from the Charger’s 3 yard line when the score was only 7-0 in favor of Charter Oak.
The Bulldog’s settled for a field goal to make it 7-3, but that was the closest West Covina ever got to the lead.
The Bulldog’s end the season with a 7-5 record. A fine season and a nice turnaround from that opening game disaster vs El Rancho.
Good Luck to all the senior year Bulldogs, It was a lot of fun watching you play this year.
West Covina Bulldogs advance to the Quarterfinals
The Bulldogs finished the regular season by taking care of Nogales easily and started the CIF Southeast Playoffs vs the Matadors of San Gabriel. But the Matadors(even with a hard trying team and an elusive QB) were no match for the Bulldogs.
The final score ended at 40-14, and now the Bulldogs face the defending champion Charter Oak Chargers. (Thanks to a ridiculous CIF ranking system, these two quality teams are meeting much earlier than they should be).
Note; there was limited video taken for the Nogales game and I may post that in the near future, but for now please enjoy these San Gabriel highlights.
West Covina JV and Freshman Teams Have Good Seasons
The West Covina Jr. Varsity and Freshman Teams both finished the season at 7 wins and 3 losses. The Bulldog Freshman Team also went a perfect 4-0 in league play.
Special thanks to Head Coaches Jeff Platt (J.V) , George Johnson (Frosh) and their staff for the hard work it takes to maintain a successful football program.
Here are some video highlights of the J.V Team’s overwhelming victory vs the Nogales Nobles.
Bulldogs defeat unbeaten Rowland, gain playoff spot
The Varsity Bulldogs took on the previously unbeaten Rowland Raiders and made it look rather easy; winning by a score of 32-10.
This win puts West Covina in the Southeast Division playoffs, and if all other games next week are played according to expectations (Bulldogs beat Nogales, South Hills beats Rowland) the Bulldogs will end up the number two seed in the San Antonio League.
Here are some highlights.
Bulldogs Take Step Towards The Playoffs
The Bulldogs and the Walnut Mustangs came into last Friday Nights Game both needing a win after dropping their first league game. The Bulldogs asserted their superiority quickly and jumped out to a 17-0 lead and never looked back on their way to a 31-11 Homecoming victory.
Another big game awaits the Bulldogs this Friday as they travel to take on the Rowland Raiders. The winner of this game will most likely secure a 2nd seed San Antonio League playoff spot (barring an unforeseen loss to Nogales, of course). The Bulldogs are also looking to avenge a loss at home to the Raiders last year.
Bulldogs Lose Crown,Take On Mustangs Next
The Varsity Bulldog’s three game winning streak came to a screeching halt last Friday when they lost to rival South Hills 27-6. The game was not as close as the score indicates.
West Covina’s offense had absolutely no punch, and the defense could not contain the running attack of the Huskies.
This is homecoming week for the Bulldogs and they find themselves facing another team in a must-win situation; the Walnut Mustangs. Kickoff is set for 7pm on Friday.
The JV Team will be hosting Walnut on Thursday, and the Frosh Team will be on the road at Walnut the same day. Kickoff for both games is 3:15 pm.
West Covina Bulldogs Finish Non-League in Style
The Bulldogs came in a prohibitive favorite over a struggling Diamond Bar team, but the Brahmas did not go down easy. Diamond Bar’s no huddle offense caused some problems in the first half and stayed in contention all the way through the 3rd quarter.
The Bulldogs finally put the game away with long touchdown runs by QB George Johnson and RB Ricky Johnson. The highlight play of the game may have been the 100+ yard “pick six” by the Bulldog’s Defensive Back Andrew Perez. Final score Bulldogs 41 Brahmas 20.
West Covina Routs Los Altos
The Varsity Bulldogs improved their record to 2-3 with an easy 47-12 win over visiting Los Altos High.
Senior running back Ricky Johnson scored 3 times along with four other Bulldog running backs scoring a touchdown each. Ricky Johnson also had a kickoff return for a score that was called back for a holding penalty.
The Bulldogs travel to Diamond Bar for their last non-league game of the season this Friday Oct. 9th. Kickoff at 7 pm
